Welcome to The Good Life!

٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶

Hello and welcome to our little part of cyberspace! I'm Viki and live with my husband, best friend and personal chef Paul at the top of the Elham Valley! Our friends refer to us as Tom and Barbara, because we're basically trying to live The Good Life! We run a business called Valley Crafts UK selling our own handmade and handpainted thingymabobs on Etsy - www.valleycraftsuk.com

We are owned by two cats and have a random number of chickens - including some of our neighbour's birds which tend to pop by from time to time... Paul can mostly be found in his workshop creating wondrous things out of wood, like chicken arks and cat houses, or in the kitchen making delicious fudge and chutneys. I spend most of my time in the office/craft room where I knit, crochet, attempt to learn to sew, and paint traditional canalia (that's "roses and castles" style painting).

We grow our own veg, brew our own beers and wines, make chutney, eat free-range eggs from our own chickens and are a hybrid of country bumpkins and cool hippies with some boho chic thrown in for good measure.

Dukan Do It?!

Good morning! Right, I don’t like diets with names. I never have. I don’t really like diets. I lost 3 stone just by eating better and more healthy, but I still have a stone and a half to lose before I get down to a weight that I’m happy with. I’m currently 9st 8lb but want to get down to 8. A couple of years ago I was down to 8st 4lb but couldn’t keep the weight off so it’s now drastic measures for me before we start a family. Some lovely ladies in my Twitter feed (you know who you are!) have been talking about this “Dukan” diet they’re on. They’re always talking about their amazing achievements and still seem to be having fun at the same time! I’m skeptical, I’ll admit. As I said, a diet with a name is really not my thing! Then, yesterday, something weird happened and I was flicking through Amazon when in my recommended list popped up the Dukan book! I thought this was a bit odd seeing as I’ve never searched for a diet book at all. Anyway, it was £3.99. Bargain. I clicked on it and it explained that it’s a diet French ladies swear by (apparently), with a large influence from French recipes. This is a huge turn on for me. I think the basic idea is that you start on proteins and slowly build up your tolerance to carbs until you can eat like a normal person and keep the weight off. I’m especially skeptical about no-carb diets. Originally, I lost my main bulk by living off pasta, bread and potatoes, and I’ve heard from people who have cut out carbs that they lost a LOAD of weight quickly but put it back on as soon as they saw a piece of bread. I don’t want to be like that. My nan is 70 odd and she’s still obsessed with dieting. I just want to shift this last little bit but I think my body needs a change. Originally it took me 2 years to lose the 3 stone but that’s stayed off. I’m on the last hurdle! And it’s a high one :-(

I haven’t purchased the book yet, but I think that a tenner for the book and recipe book might be a good investment… I’m a bit funny about fish and I fear it starts off fairly fish-based, but the ladies in my Twitter have been making some lovely things which I’d be really tempted to try (and will probably like…). So, I think I’m going to go for it today and make the purchase. I’d be interested to hear people’s views, but I will probably carry on regardless to see how it goes - I can either lose £10 or 10lbs! I’ll keep you updated! :-)
