Welcome to The Good Life!

٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶

Hello and welcome to our little part of cyberspace! I'm Viki and live with my husband, best friend and personal chef Paul at the top of the Elham Valley! Our friends refer to us as Tom and Barbara, because we're basically trying to live The Good Life! We run a business called Valley Crafts UK selling our own handmade and handpainted thingymabobs on Etsy - www.valleycraftsuk.com

We are owned by two cats and have a random number of chickens - including some of our neighbour's birds which tend to pop by from time to time... Paul can mostly be found in his workshop creating wondrous things out of wood, like chicken arks and cat houses, or in the kitchen making delicious fudge and chutneys. I spend most of my time in the office/craft room where I knit, crochet, attempt to learn to sew, and paint traditional canalia (that's "roses and castles" style painting).

We grow our own veg, brew our own beers and wines, make chutney, eat free-range eggs from our own chickens and are a hybrid of country bumpkins and cool hippies with some boho chic thrown in for good measure.

A Summary of the Week

What a strange week in our history. The biggest Earthquake Japan has ever recorded, tsunami’s, aftershocks and utter devastation. It makes everything we’ve done this week seem so insignificant, however life in this part of the world must go on whilst we spare thoughts for those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

Aside from what’s been going on in the news, we are progressing with our plans to set up the new business, although it may not be in April as we had originally planned since there is still a lot of work to do on new websites and blog sites, as well as making stock to put in the new Etsy store. We’re not disappointed - we want everything to be right when we launch, (another thing we learned from The Krafty Lady!), and we’re super excited about introducing everyone to our new venture! I’m currently looking for a part time job to keep myself busy whilst we’re getting everything organised, but The Krafty Lady has been really busy for the past couple of weeks so I’m spending quite a lot of time getting rid of the last bits of stock we have left! It’s been really good fun.

Paul has finished the new chicken ark and it’s FINALLY out of his workshop so he has a bit more space in there to start new projects! The ark is now in its final resting place in the new chicken run, and there’s just a bit more fencing to do before the chickens will be able to run free. It looks brilliant - I must post some photos! We’ll keep their old house in case we need to quarantine any of the birds. Hopefully at some point in the next few months we’ll be adding to our small flock of four to get some good meat birds. We’ll never have to buy supermarket chicken or eggs again!

The seeds I sowed the other day are struggling to come through - the weather has not been brilliant and not really warm enough for them to germinate, but we’ll be getting some more in over the next few weeks as the weather *hopefully* improves. Even the cats are getting fed up with not knowing what the weather will do next. The bulbs we planted last year have come up beautifully and the garden is slowly coming back to life with spots of colour randomly appearing giving us some hope that Summer will eventually get here! The veg patch is still far too wet to dig over but we need to get our early potatoes in so we’ll get out there during the week to start working on that. We’re also planning to get a water feature into the garden as soon as possible because there is no natural water source around here at all so it would be lovely for the birds and fairies!

My driving is progressing really nicely. Better than even I thought it would, but I’m determined to pass my test this year which helps somewhat! My instructor is brilliant and she doesn’t think it will be long at all until she puts me in for my test. The new car is helping a lot - I drove to Mum and Dad’s yesterday which is one of my longest drives yet on roads I don’t know that well. Paul said I did really well. Once I’ve nailed reversing I’ll be ready for my test. I’m so lucky that I’m able to get a bit of practise in between driving lessons. Whilst I’ll still enjoy walking, being able to drive when we are so isolated here will be so helpful. I should have learnt years ago but I’m really pleased with myself for starting now.

Well it appears my coffee cup is empty and I can hear the faint voice that is the office calling me to work so I must get on - there’s lots to do and not enough hours in the day at the moment! All the while we’ll be sending positive thoughts to Japan and all those who have been affected by the disaster, saddened by the fact that from here the best we can do is donate to relief funds and watch the news in the hope that they can soon begin rebuilding their lives, towns and businesses. Stay strong and be safe xxx
